God’s Love

Dear Elisha,

Even before you were born, your papa and I have always prayed for you.  If there’s one thing we desire the most, it’s for you to grow up as a man who honors God above all.  So since birth, I always made sure you grow up knowing God, His word and His love.

A few weeks back as I was tidying up your drawings (checking which ones to throw and which ones to keep), which I usually do on a monthly basis, I saw this drawing that brought tears to my eyes… The moment I saw it I was reassured that giving up everything I gave up was and is all worth it, because you’re growing knowing what God’s Love is… and to your young mind this is what God’s Love means…

God's Love

After wiping my tears I called you and asked what your drawings mean, starting with this one and your explanation made me teary eyed… “God’s love is our family because you take care of me and Meimei.”  I then asked how about papa and you answered, “Papa takes care of you and me and Meimei too.” Even right now as I’m writing about this drawing I’m crying.  I am overjoyed that as your parents, we were able to make you understand what God’s love is… At the same time humbled that in spite our shortcomings, you still felt God’s love through us.

As you grow up EJ you’ll learn more about God and who He is, and you’ll understand more of His unfailing love.  Mama and papa’s love may fail, but God’s love won’t and no matter where you go and what you do, it will always be available for you… In times you’re up, thank Him for His love that brought you where you are.  In times you’re low, thank Him for His love that never lets you go.  His love has carried me through my toughest times and definitely, His love will be with you anytime, anywhere.

I love you son… and may God;s love, grace and wisdom continue to fill your papa and me as we train you and Meimei in the way you should go…

Love,

Mama

Teachable Two

Dear Meimei,

Yippe! You’re officially in the “tiny tot” age! And what does that mean?  Some people describe it as a terrible two stage, and there’s even a website labeled terribletwos! But that’s not how I look at you sweety pie.  Even with your ahia, I can honestly say he was never terrible as what those websites declare.  It was even a big time for him to adjust because we moved to China when he was 23 months… yet in spite the new environment, your papa and I didn’t have problems with him.  Yes we did have difficult times, but hey, even us adults have those days we don’t feel good and we just want to be ourselves or even do “not so nice things”, but that doesn’t mean we’re TERRIBLE…  So when you become a mom someday, never label your kids terrible two ok?  It’s a matter of perspective and the more we believe in the best in our kids, the more we’ll be amazed at how wonderful they could really become at this stage.

According to Erik Erikson, this is the WILL stage wherein you learn to develop wither Autonomy – a sense of being able to handle many problems on your own, or Shame and Doubt if your caregiver, (of course it’s me and papa) refuse to let you perform tasks of which you are capable, or ridicule your early attempts at self-sufficiency.

Your pa and I allow you certain limits but in areas where we know you can handle, we give you freedom to try to do it, no matter how many times you have to try, we patiently wait until you get it done right. 🙂

You are very teachable plangging.  The day we went home from your hospitalization on your 3rd surgery which was the colostomy closure, you immediately pooped in the toilet bowl! You were only 10 months and now at age 2, you are 85% toilet trained.  Considering that you’re an IMPERFORATE ANUS baby, this is a miracle because many articles say that kids like you can be expected to be “delayed” in toilet training. For the record, you sat on the toilet seat earlier than your ahia did! 🙂

At 1 year and 3 months you already knew how to blow your nose!  I just showed you how it’s done then you did it on your own.  The older you get, the more teachable you become.  A few months back I started teaching you how to beat the egg and your ahia how to break it.  So now every time we cook and there’s egg, ahia breaks it and you beat it!

Given a paint and a brush, you can paint on your own.  Given paper and pen, you can draw on your own.  Given toys, you can also play on your own.  However, there are still times (of course) that you say, “MAMA TEACH ME PLEASE.”  I know you just want to spend more time with me, or I guess, you like the tickle time which is usually part of our play time. 🙂  You also like to read and study. I can go on and on with the list, but I won’t.  You’ll discover them from time to time as I continue to write these letters my dear.

My prayer for you little one is that in the coming days, months and even years, you will be more and more hungry to learn new things, in every area of your life.  Every minute with you is a teaching moment.  I think the only time we stop learning is when we’re sleeping, haha.  But more than anything else, it is my heart’s desire that you and your ahia learn and hunger for God’s presence in your lives, that’s why worship and prayer in each day are never absent.  Every morning, we start the day with watching worship videos, we sing and dance as we worship, and we end the night with prayer.  You already know how to worship God and have memorized our bedtime prayer since you were 16 months. Right now you can declare healing upon family members who are sick and even declare healing upon yourself by saying: BY THE STRIPES OF JESUS I AM HEALED!

I will be forever grateful to God for giving you to us, you are a MIRACLE sweetheart.  Each time we see you, we are reminded of God’s faithfulness, provision, healing, love, joy and many more.  You are a living reminder to your papa and me that God’s goodness will follow us all the days of our lives.

Happy 2nd birthday Meimei… You are indeed, God’s promise of JOY.

I love you.

A 4 Year Old’s Prayer

Dear Elisha,

I’ve been meaning to write you about your prayer times because there had been a lot of instances that you amazed me with your prayers, the ones that you say on your own… Here’s one that’s very fresh that you uttered before you slept this evening (Dec. 2, 2009):

Dear God our Father,

Thank you for blessing our friends and family.

Thank you for our ROCKING CHAIR.

Thank you that tomorrow I can go to school and make my… (you paused and asked me – Mama, what will we make tomorrow in my science class, I forgot – so I had to remind you that you’ll make a clay dough) … my clay dough.

Thank you for blessing others.

In Jesus name, Amen.

I won’t and can’t enumerate everything but just to give you an idea of what you prayed for as a 4 year old boy, read on  🙂

… for Jose Rizal and Ninoy Aquino – that God will bring them back to life so you can see them fly… Well, you thought they’re super heroes so I had a hard time explaining that they’re not!

… for Your papa’s gout to go away and your tita Celyn’s cancer to go away as your prayer before MEALTIME! 🙂

… for the poor family that once slept outside Wilmar’s gate – that God will give them bed so they can sleep on a nice bed,  that God will give them soap so they can take a bath and food so they will not be hungry.

As part of our bedtime prayer, we pray for our family, friends and our country. But sometimes you’d say something like – Mama, let’s not pray for Philippines tonight, I want only China. Or it’s like this – Mama, I don’t want to pray for places, only people. Other times it’s – Mama, I will only pray a very short prayer because I’m sleepy.

Many times we start our prayer time with these lines:

Dear Lord,

Thank you for our wonderful day, Thank you for guiding us today

Be with us Lord as we sleep tonight, Grant us sweetdreams so we can sleep tight.

God Bless Papa, Mama, EJ and Meimei. God Bless the Lo and the Boyero families. God Bless those we love and those who love us.

God Bless China and the Philippines…

Then go on with our other prayer items like praying for a sick family member to be healed, for God to take care of papa, etc.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

But there was one night I cried after we prayed… It was when you had your accident then you asked me while we were praying – Mama, where will God get His healing power? I asked you why are you asking and you told me – Because I want Him to heal me now, my wound is very painful. I just hugged you and told you to sleep and when you wake up, the pain will go away already because God will take it away. Then you said, OK. The next day when you woke up you told me that it was only baby painful because God already healed you!

I pray that as you grow, your knowledge of our God will also grow because as long as you “know” God and have that relationship with Him, no matter what comes your way, you’ll remain standing. His love will see you through.

God Bless you son and I am looking forward to more “CUTE” but effective prayer times with you.

Lastly, I’m sure you made God smile when you thanked Him for the rocking chair! 😀

I love you.

Mama
